The Chicago area stamp shows encourage stamp collector to show a portion of their collections in 16-page exhibits and may offer various ribbons based upon philatelic judge's opinion of the content of the material. Clubs are also encouraged to show member's material to showcase the varied interest of its members.

Large mail order companies approached the US Post Office to obtain a discount on mailing costs. The result for JC Penny, Montgomery Wards, Sears, and others were the creation of precancel stamps. These stamps were "canceled" in sheets before being affixed to the mail so the post office did not have to run the mail through the cancellation process thus saving money. In turn, the mail order company was required to presort the mail by address. Both parties saved.
